Exploring the different sectors that are out there and what opportunities they offer can help you identify the key transferable skills that employers are looking for. Academic and research
For some students, the love of their subject inspires them to continue to study at masters and PhD level which naturally leads onto a career in academia. Opportunities for academics exist across the UK's highly developed university sector and across the world. PhDs are also very welcome for people entering the teaching profession at all levels.

Accounting and financial services
Accounts professionals may work in financial management, auditing, tax, forensic and compliance roles, amongst others and be employed in private (also known as public) practice accounting firms, ‘in house’ within organisation finance departments, retail and investment banks. Chartered accountants may choose professional training through ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA from a wide range of degree disciplines. The largest employers of accounting professionals are the public administration, education and health sectors and ‘The Big Five’ that consist of , , , and , with PWC the market leader. The majority of employers are small and medium-sized firms.
Financial services firms may include retail and investment banks, broking, consultancy and risk management firms, insurance and underwriting providers, actuarial services and pensions providers and investors, responsible for providing clients with financial products and services and forecasting and investment of funds.
The accounting sector employs over 800,000 accountants and accounts related employees in the UK, responsible for the 'collection, analysis and reporting of financial information' which is core to commercial success and the economy, contributing £59 million to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Advertising, PR and marketing
There is sometimes confusion over how similar job roles are across advertising, public relations (PR) and marketing. All three areas welcome graduates from all degree disciplines but employers eagerly seek graduates with high-level communication and digital skills.
In most cases, roles in advertising, PR and marketing are quite different.
The UK's advertising sector is one of the most highly developed and many large agencies have offices right across the world. Roles in advertising agencies tend to be specific and split between working on the creative side (art director, copywriter) or the business side (account management, business planning and research). Advertising agencies are situated predominantly in London, although there are a few located in Manchester and Birmingham.
Marketing and PR agencies are more widely spread across the country and many organisations may choose to have their in-house department. In-demand skills include a strong understanding of social media platforms, digital skills in web, photography and video manipulation, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Having relevant work experience can increase your chance of success. Experience can also be gained through writing and using social media channels through university clubs and societies, newspapers and video production and used in any application.

Animal care
Working with animals can be a competitive sector for graduates, although there are increasing numbers of new opportunities within areas such as the animal behavioural sector. Direct roles include working in zoos, conservation, animal protection, animal science and nutrition, the armed forces, research, and farming. Armed forces and emergency services

Armed forces

The armed forces are the collective name given to the three main services that defend the United Kingdom and its overseas territories. The Royal Navy, the Royal Airforce, and the British Army all seek to recruit substantial numbers of graduates throughout the year. As a serving member of the armed forces, you could be employed in a wide range of roles ranging from combat roles to technical roles, learning development offices to musicians, military police to pharmacist officers. These roles are further supported by civilian personnel working in the Ministry of Defence (gov.uk) or one of its agencies. Getting experience in advance is beneficial and this can be gained by joining the Devon Royal Navy University Unit or one of the reserve forces units locally.

Emergency services

The emergency services in the UK are provided by the Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Coastguard Services. The coordination of the services is provided by emergency planners who direct each service to ensure emergencies are dealt with in the most successful and time efficient way possible. Supporting the emergency services are teams of other professionals such as probation officers, social workers, Health and Safety inspectors and trading standards officers.

Business, consulting and management
Many big graduate recruiters have general management training schemes that allow graduates to experience management in different business areas. Typically, over two years, graduates may experience sales, marketing, finance, human resources, and retail. Upon completion, graduates can apply for a role in their preferred department when an opportunity becomes available.
Other organisations may offer specific management training schemes, where graduates can apply directly to their preferred area of interest from the start. Management training schemes are highly competitive, and many organisations require a 2:1 or above to apply.
Management consultants investigate business problems and provide advice and solutions in different business areas including, finance, operations, HR, strategy, technology, or specialist support areas such as environmental and sustainability to public and private sector organisations, charities, and social enterprises.
‘The Big Five’ independent consultancies are , , , and , with PWC the market leader. Many of these recruit large numbers of graduates on an annual basis directly through universities for roles in business, management, and accountancy. However, many employers seeking to fill vacancies in business and management nationally are small and medium-sized firms.

Charity and development work
The charity and voluntary sector is also known as the 'third sector 'or 'not-for-profit sector'. They aim to create social rather than material wealth.
According to the UK Civil Society Almanac 2020, the voluntary sector contributed £18.2billion to the UK economy in 2017/18. The 166,592 voluntary organizations in the UK employed 909,088 people in 2019.
Job roles can be very varied, and many organizations specifically target graduates for their broad range of specific and transferable skills. It is possible to enter the charity and development sector with any degree. Job roles include accountancy and finance, administration, advice and counselling, business development and project management, campaigning, lobbying, and fundraising, corporate social responsibility, graphic design, human resources, information technology, marketing and public relations, research and policy, retail, social care, teaching, education, and training and volunteer management and co-ordination.

Chemistry and chemical engineering
There are many options open to chemists. From lab-based roles in a range of different sectors though to work in consultancy, science communication, patent management or project management. Opportunities are open to graduates with a degree, masters degree, or PhD.
It is possible to apply for roles in chemical engineering with a chemistry degree, particularly in shortage areas where employers offer some training (although you will typically need further academic qualifications in the future to become a chartered chemical engineer).

Children and youth work
Working with children can come with its challenges but can also be extremely rewarding. These roles come with high levels of responsibilities where effective decision making is crucial. If you are thinking about a career involving children and young adults, gaining specific experience through volunteering in the local community can significantly increase your chances of getting into this competitive sector. Working with vulnerable groups may be difficult due to the sensitive nature that some roles involve. Civil engineering, geology and the built environment
Civil engineering and the built environment cover the domestic construction industry such as house building and critical infrastructure projects such as roads, rail, power stations, renewable energy, and earth resources. The UK has several high-profile projects that are currently under construction or about to start. These include HS2, Cross Rail, Hinkley Point C, Dogger Bank windfarm and the controversial Heathrow expansion. These projects require graduates with a broad range of skills. Creative arts and design
The creative industries are vast and can cover visual art, design, media, performance, publishing and games. There is a whole range of further disciplines within each of these, which become industries in themselves. For example, interior, graphic, fashion, performance sportswear, user interface, web, and games all come under design. Likewise, film, TV production, advertising, marketing, and PR (public relations) would all fall under media. Companies in the creative industries tend to be small or medium-sized enterprises that will either employ graduates on a permanent, temporary, or freelance basis. The largest employers of creative graduates are media organisations such as the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. However, substantial amounts of creative content are subcontracted out to smaller production companies, particularly advertising and design agencies.
Having a specific degree and relevant work experience can make your CV stand out with employers, and students can gain creative experience whilst studying through freelance projects, as well as course-based and independent work experience. Many digital skills in image manipulation, video editing, social media marketing and web design are hugely transferable and make graduates employable in a wide range of creative and marketing roles across all industries.

The engineering sector is vast and includes the following sectors: aeronautical, automotive, bioengineering, chemical, electronic and electrical, mechanical, renewable energy and nuclear, to name a few. Graduates with engineering degrees are in high demand. Environment and conservation
Within environment and conservation, there is a wide range of job roles within the public, private and charity sectors. Government bodies such as Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), The Environment Agency, Natural England and local authorities and charities employ tens of thousands of people. Increasingly, private engineering companies are hiring specific graduates into environmental consultancy roles for engineering projects across the UK and abroad.
