The Sustainability, Health and Wellbeing Interest Group (SHWIG) brings together university staff from a range of departments, students, alumni and colleagues from clinical settings, to discuss innovations, ideas, research and solutions within the areas of planetary health and sustainable healthcare. We meet a few times a year, and invite guest speakers to join us and share their work. The group is informal, and we are always looking for new members to join us!

Dr Donna Gaffney (USA) discussed strategies for improving the wellbeing and mental health of healthcare professionals working within the context of the evolving post-pandemic landscape. Donna's talk is based on her recently published book 'Courageous Well-Being for Nurses: Strategies for Renewal.

In this talk, we heard ICU specialist sister and #RehabLegend Kate Tantam discuss 'Building a garden in intensive care: from one patients dream after a spinal cord injury left him bedbound for 4 months in intensive care, to a garden fit for everyone'.

Pete discussed the completion of his thesis entitled “Investigating opportunities for sustainability behaviours within Paramedic and Ambulance Service practice”, which aimed to explore and investigate sustainability behaviours of UK ambulance service personnel and how they contribute to a reduce, re-use, recycle (RRR) ethos.

Hannah presented the findings of her MSc dissertation titled "I have had an epiphany" - Student nurses' reflections on their carbon footprint in simulation enhanced learning. Discussions acknowledged the importance of this research, and the relevance of embedding sustainability within clinical skills sessions.
Alli Holland, Community Nurse and Ƶ alumna

Alli presented her idea of getting community nurses back on their (E) bikes for the benefit of human health and wellbeing as well as planetary health. She was the winner of the sustainability prize in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Ƶ in 2022, and is now planning to develop her idea in practice.

At this meeting, we heard Marie Elf, Professor in Nursing at Dalarna University, Sweden, talk about planetary health and education for sustainable healthcare. Her talk was based on the "AMEE Consensus Statement: Planetary health and education for sustainable healthcare", which she jointly developed and published in 2021 (DOI: ).
Chloe Griggs, the Director for Enterprise and Engagement within the School of Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University

Chloe presented the findings of her PhD titled 'Engagement, disengagement and non-engagement with sustainable healthcare: an exploratory sequential study'. Discussions focused on the practical and theoretical implications of her psychology based research.

Sarah Cottell, Liz Byrt and Francesca Rees, School of Nursing and Midwifery alumni

Three alumni from the School of Nursing and Midwifery presented their work: Sarah Cottell (midwife) talked about the breastfeeding as a sustainable healthcare solution; Liz Byrt (mental health nurse) spoke about the benefits of blue space for students, colleagues and people using mental health services; and Francesca Rees (midwife) shared her work on embedding sustainability education in clinical practice.
