Mr Gavin Douglas

University Registrar and Secretary

Office of Vice Chancellor

Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, Gavin provides executive leadership to a portfolio of 4 directorates (Academic Registry, Research and Innovation, Planning and Analytics, Library and Academic Development) and a Legal and Governance team; he is also Secretary to the Board of Governors. He works closely with SDVC, the CFO and other members of the Executive to ensure that the professional services he leads:
  • support an excellent student experience;
  • support the achievement of the University’s academic missions across education and research;
  • are efficient and effective, and continually improving.
As Secretary to the Board, he has a wider responsibility for ensuring the effective governance of the University’s business.
His other responsibilities include:
  • Chair, OfS Steering Group
  • Chair, University Health, Safety & Wellbeing Committee
  • Chair, Information Governance Group
  • Chair, UEG/UPSU Advisory Group
  • Chair, UEG Risk Review Group
  • University Whistleblowing Officer
  • Leadership of specific projects of strategic importance to the University.
  • Governor, University Technical College (Plymouth)
Gavin is a member of University Senate, and attends Board of Governors meetings, and meetings of the Finance and Audit & Risk Committees, Remuneration Committee, Nominations Committee and the Health Safety and Wellbeing Advisory Committee.
Gavin is a member of the UUK Free Speech Working Group.
Gavin joined Plymouth in 2022 from the University of Edinburgh, where he was Deputy Secretary, Student Experience, having previously held roles at the University of Sheffield and Robert Gordon University. In his spare time, Gavin enjoys singing, running and doing up the house (a seemingly never-ending task).
