Green Starts Here – sustainable campus dining in 2024

2024 has been a remarkable year for the Catering team, and we’re incredibly proud of our achievements! Not only have we renewed our 3-star rating with the , but we’ve also earned as a university, receiving 2 out of 3 stars.
We’re committed to continuing our sustainable practices across campus, offering students eco-friendly food and beverage options all year round.

Sustainable food options on campus

Be even greener by choosing from our sustainable menu items! Whether ordering a Fairtrade organic coffee, opting for one of our vegan options, or indulging in a vegetarian meal, we’ve got you covered. Daily vegan specials are available at Drake’s Kitchen, John Bull Cafe and RLB Cafe. Loafers Deli serves great sandwich options, while The Container and other campus cafes offer tasty treats. Don’t miss out on Reservoir Cafe, our vegetarian and vegan cafe offering healthy and delicious meals!

The Great Sandwich Showdown

The winner of the Great Sandwich Showdown is The Italian Job (sundried tomatoes, mozzarella, pesto, rocket and balsamic glaze)! This is our Sandwich of the Week at Loafers Deli, available for just £3.75 for students.

Global Fairtrade Recipe Book – ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ

Calling all food lovers!

The ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ, a proud 2-star Fairtrade University, is creating the 2nd edition of our Global Recipe Book – and we need YOUR recipes!
Do you have a dish that represents your culture, a family favourite, or a go-to meal or cake? Submit your recipe for a chance to be featured online and even served as a special in our campus cafes!
Fairtrade ingredients are encouraged but not required – we're simply raising awareness of the options available.

How to take part

Submissions open: 1–30 April
What we need from you:
  • Dish name
  • Ingredients list (Fairtrade where possible)
  • Method
  • Photo (optional but encouraged)
  • Any other relevant details
Submit your recipe to catering@plymouth.ac.uk.

Why Fairtrade?

Using Fairtrade ingredients supports ethical and sustainable farming, ensuring fair wages for farmers worldwide. Consider using Fairtrade chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar, bananas, spices, and more in your recipe where possible!

Be featured on campus!

One lucky recipe will be chosen to be prepared and served in one of our cafes, based on ingredient availability and cost – giving you the chance to see your dish enjoyed by students and staff!

Coffee with Cops

The University's Community Police Officer is running sessions when students, staff or members of the community are welcome to sit and chat with them.
Join us for a friendly coffee chat with local law enforcement. Have a coffee and chat with no pressure or agendas and get some advice with a cop from Devon & Cornwall Police. All sessions will be in Portland's Pizzeria between 12:00–14:00.

The Human Library

What is it like to be born blind? How do you move on from addiction? Why do you pray five times a day?
Curiosity and questions are welcome at the Human Library, where the Books are people and reading is a conversation from which you can learn about lived experiences of stereotypes, prejudice and taboo topics. The Human Library creates a space for people to openly and respectfully discuss subjects that may feel challenging or unfamiliar, without fear of saying the 'wrong' thing.

Plymouth Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club

The Plymouth Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club CIC organises a tasty breakfast at Drake's Kitchen (09:00–11:00) and an opportunity for all Armed Forces (serving or veterans) and their families to come along and share conversations with the community. All ages, and all services personnel and their families are welcome at this free event – no need to book.
